117: Where Do Grandparents Go?
What I’m thinking about: Where do our grandparents live as they age?
We need to protect our grandparents as it’s getting rough out there. Deaths in nursing homes and residential care facilities account for 45% of COVID-19 related deaths. And, here in Marin, adults over 80 are 67% of all deaths.
Nursing homes are tight indoor spaces with lots of residents so they’re not great places to battle COVID, but there aren’t that many other options. My grandmother was itching to get out of her living facility so my mom and uncle took her to the mountains. That’s one option.
Another alternative that I’ve gotten to know over the years is SilverNest. It’s a Denver company that will match older adults to live to together. Think of a service that will make Golden Girls tv show come true.
For me, when I think about what I could do for my parents, I have dreams of building an ADU (or “granny flat”) in my backyard for them to hang out in as they get older. From what I can tell it’s minimum $250k to get one installed, so it ain’t cheap. From my research, this company seem to have a pretty good pre-fab option.
The demographics are rough and most communities do not have the housing that will be needed as their residents age, so if we can get through this pandemic, it’ll be an interesting time figuring out where everyone goes. I’m open to ideas.
At My House
Speaking of backyards… Because my wife is awesome, she put up a zipline in ours for our kids.

Cases
The US set another record for new coronavirus cases yesterday, with more than 59,400 infections.
States are blowing up and we have to get back inside to endure it. I hope you all stay safe during this time so we can get cases back down to levels where we don’t need to fear going outside. Good luck everyone.
